Spending Christmas abroad offers a chance to experience new traditions, visit some bucket-list destinations, and create unique memories away from home. For some, it can also be a way to avoid traditional Christmas stress, such as cooking and cleaning, bond with loved ones, or simply take a break from routine and see the world. 

But which foreign destinations do Brits want to visit over Christmas? 

Well, we have analysed Google Trends search data to determine where Brits want to spend Christmas, comparing search results for November 2025 with those from November 2024.

1. Rome, Italy

Average flight time: 2 hrs. 35 mins

With a 121% increase from November 2024, Rome is the top destination that Brits are looking to visit this Christmas. 

The Italian capital is home to some of the most famous and iconic landmarks in the world, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon. Guests will find fewer crowds compared to the summer months, meaning December is a great time for sightseeing. In December, Via del Corso and Piazza Venezia are decorated with Christmas decorations. 

2. Strasbourg, France

Average flight time: 1 hr. 30 mins

Often referred to as the “Capital of Christmas”, Strasbourg, France, has seen a 115% increase in Brits wanting to visit. 

The city's Christmas markets are some of the oldest in Europe, dating back to the late 1500s. The combination of medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, and Christmas lights creates a festive atmosphere that earns it the nickname. 

3. Vienna, Austria

Average flight time: 2 hrs. 15 mins

Searches for “Christmas in Vienna” are up by 53% this year compared to last.

Vienna is another European city with a huge Christmas atmosphere in December. Not only will you find incredible Christmas markets, but visitors can also see the Belvedere Palace illuminated and enjoy other festive activities, such as ice skating, concerts, and exploring landmarks like St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Hofburg Palace.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest, Hungary, is the next destination on the list, up by 49% compared to last year. 

Budapest's famous thermal baths, such as Széchenyi Thermal Bath, are a popular activity even in winter. Visitors can also see iconic landmarks on Castle Hill for stunning views of the festive city. They are open every day, including holidays. If you’re after a white Christmas, Budapest is also known to get snow in December. Budapest is also a popular port for river cruises, if you’re searching for a unique Christmas experience. 

5. Berlin, Germany

Average flight time: 1 hr. 50 mins

Searches for “Christmas in Berlin” have increased by 44% in 2025. 

Berlin is home to over 60 different markets throughout the city, offering a diverse range of handcrafted gifts and seasonal foods. The market at Charlottenburg Palace is a famous example. There is also plenty of history to see in the German capital, including the Berlin Wall Memorial, Brandenburg Gate and the East Side Gallery. 

6. Prague, Czech Republic

The next destination on the list is Prague, which is up by 36.99%.

Prague is home to the iconic Prague Castle and historic Charles Bridge, which connects the castle to the Old Town. Those visiting the Czech capital in December can see the city’s famous landmarks illuminated with Christmas lights. Visit Prague for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture, which make it feel like a fairy tale in the winter months.

Searches for “Christmas in Barcelona” have grown by 32% in 2025 compared to last year. 

Barcelona is home to iconic landmarks such as the Sagrada Família and Park Güell. In December, guests will find fewer crowds and milder temperatures, allowing you to explore the sights at a more leisurely pace. If you’re looking for a vibrant nightlife, Barcelona has a huge variety of options, from sophisticated cocktail bars and chic rooftop lounges to bustling bars and pubs.

8. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is the next destination on the list, with searches up by 26%.

Copenhagen at Christmas is renowned for its festive atmosphere, elaborate Christmas markets, such as the one at Tivoli Gardens and Kongens Nytorv, as well as unique seasonal activities, including ice skating and the Santa Lucia Kayak Parade. The city embodies the Danish concept of "hygge," creating a cosy atmosphere with twinkling lights and candlelit cafes, perfect for those seeking a relaxing Christmas.

9. Milan, Italy

Searches for “Christmas in Milan” are up by 20% in 2025, compared to 2024. 

Over Christmas, Milan transforms into a stylish winter wonderland, illuminated by festive lights that stretch from the Duomo to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Visitors can also enjoy ice skating in various locations, such as Piazza Gae Aulenti. If you enjoy shopping, Milan is famous for its major fashion houses and is a centre for luxury shopping, with famous districts like the Quadrilatero d'Oro. 

10. New York, USA

Average flight time: 8 hrs.

Finally, searches for “Christmas in New York” have increased by 16%.

New York City is known for its festive atmosphere in December. The city is beautifully decorated and hosts many special events, including the Rockefeller Centre tree lighting, holiday markets, and shows like the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular. You’ll also get to see some of the world's most iconic tourist attractions, such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Times Square.
