Gen Z at sea: Why cruises appeal to younger travellers
Cruise ship

The average age of cruise passengers is decreasing, with an increasing number of Gen Z and millennial passengers embarking in 2025 compared to previous years. According to the 2025 CLIA (Cruise Line International Association) Report, 16% of cruise passengers were under 20, with a further 20% aged 20-39.

Looking towards 2026 and beyond, the cruise industry predicts higher demand from Gen Zs. A recent survey by us, which included Gen Z participants, asked passengers what attracts them most to cruising:

  • The itinerary - 80%
  • Food and drink - 71%
  • Easy and convenient travel - 64%
  • Value for money - 64%
  • Good accommodation - 58%

So why are younger generations getting into cruising? We have outlined some of the reasons that cruises are becoming popular amongst Gen Z travellers.

  1. TikTok influence
  2. The rise of travel on screen
  3. Higher demand for adult-only sailings
  4. Incredible itineraries
  5. Access and availability

1. TikTok influence

When it comes to the popular social media app TikTok, 60% of users are Gen Z, the highest of any age group, according to research by Plany. 40% of Gen Z also use TikTok as their most popular search engine. Gen Z regularly uses TikTok as a source of inspiration, and the same can be said for their travel.

TikTok

On TikTok alone, #cruise has over 32.4 billion views, with over 1 million videos posted using the hashtag. This high volume of cruise content is inspiring a new generation of cruise travellers to witness what the industry has to offer. Top TikTok influencers, such as Captain Kate McCue, the first American female cruise ship captain, are encouraging their younger audiences to book cruises. Trending TikTok videos also include #UltimateWorldCruise, a Royal Caribbean 9-month voyage that became a "digital soap opera" and has over 150 million views on the app, highlighting younger generations' interest in the cruise industry.

2. The rise of travel on screen

A recent survey we conducted found that 14% of cruise passengers said TV and film have inspired them to cruise. Travel has become a major theme on screen in recent years, with shows such as White Lotus, Race Across the World, and even Emily in Paris. This surge of travel-based shows is inspiring audiences to broaden their travel horizons, especially amongst Gen Z.

TV

According to Business Wire, 60%  of Gen Zers choose travel destinations based on TV and film, highlighting the influence of screen media on our travel choices. Location-based tourism influenced by TV or film has also caused a surge in demand for certain destinations. For example, Netflix’s Squid Game, a popular show amongst Gen Z, inspired a surge of interest in South Korea.

3. Higher demand for adult-only sailings

More and more cruise lines are offering adult-only sailings that appeal to Gen Z and other generations without children. Popular cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages and, more recently, Oceania, offer exclusive adult-only sailings. But why do adult-only cruises appeal to Gen Z?

Cruises in port

Adult-only cruises prioritise a different type of travel experience. The focus is on relaxation, sophisticated dining options, and grown-up entertainment such as late-night shows and comedy, rather than family-centric activities you’d find on most cruise ships. The social atmosphere onboard adult-only cruises, such as Virgin Voyages, also appeals to younger generations who are looking for vibrant nightlife whilst sailing the seas. The “Instagrammable” interiors of the ship, along with reliable Wi-Fi packages, are also inviting for younger crowds.

4. Incredible itineraries

According to a report by The Future Laboratory, 68% of Gen Z are seeking adventure travel experiences, and the cruise industry is catering to these needs. In 2026, you can visit destinations across all corners of the globe, meaning there are plenty of options available for different types of travellers.

Antarctica

76% of Gen Z who have been on a cruise previously plan to cruise again, according to CLIA, with itineraries being the number one reason for cruise travel. In recent years, destinations such as the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, and Cabo Verde have seen increased demand, especially among Gen Zers seeking unique and trendy travel experiences.

5. Access and availability

The cruise industry operates 365 days a year. Whether travellers are searching for a summer break in the sunshine or a winter escape to some of the world’s most remote destinations, cruising has never been easier or more available.

Booking on laptop

Not only that, but no-fly cruise options have also soared in popularity in recent years, meaning passengers can embark on their travels from the UK. This has inspired a new generation of cruise passengers seeking affordable, low-effort, high-reward travel experiences. Many of these no-fly options are also adult-only sailings.
