Iglu Cruise’s Content Marketing Intern Explores the Mediterranean & Adriatic Aboard Oosterdam
Cruising is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding ways to travel the world right now, with cruises inviting you to explore some of the most exciting destinations around the world, from the Caribbean and the Mediterranean to Alaska, Asia, and beyond. When cruising, you’ll have the chance to travel in complete comfort, wanting for nothing, while you enjoy fantastic food and engaging entertainment, and make lasting memories.
If you’re browsing Iglu Cruise’s latest cruise deals and wondering what it’s like to embark on a Mediterranean voyage, you should check out this cruise review from Aidan Farndell, Iglu Cruise’s Content Marketing Intern. Recently, he visited Trieste, Rijeka, Split, Santorini, Bodrum, Kusadasi, Istanbul, and Athens with Holland America Line, spending a memorable itinerary aboard Oosterdam. Below, he’s shared his expert opinion on this experience and insider tips worth keeping in mind when you embark on an adventure like this yourself.
What was your first impression of Oosterdam?
The ship had a relaxed, quiet atmosphere with a very spacious feel. It also features an impressive amount of art throughout the public areas, adding a lovely touch to the overall design.
What destinations did you visit during your cruise?
We visited a fantastic selection of ports across the Adriatic and Mediterranean, including Trieste, Rijeka, Split, Santorini, Bodrum, Kusadasi, Istanbul, and Athens.
Who would you recommend this ship to?
I would recommend this ship to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday, due to the ship's calm atmosphere and absence of loud, intrusive attractions.
Did you have a chance to see multiple cabin types? What were they like, and what’s one insider tip you’d like to share?
I stayed in a standard balcony cabin which had plenty of room and a very modern design, although I didn't get to see any other cabin types. My top tip would be to book a balcony cabin for the scenic views, photo opportunities, and quiet time outside.

Did your accommodation have enough storage space for a full 7-night cruise?
Yes, the cabin offered a generous amount of storage space!
How was the noise inside your accommodation? Are there any areas you advise avoiding for those selecting their own cabin?
We were situated at the front of Deck 4, which is located just above The World Stage and right next to the lifts, but we didn't hear any noise at all during our stay.
If you could only eat in one complimentary restaurant for the whole trip, which one would you choose, and what’s one must-try dish you recommend?
The Vista Dining Room—with its daily changing menu, there was always something new that caught my attention. The must-try dish I would recommend is the beef tenderloin served with creamy mash.

What about the speciality dining on Oosterdam?
The Pinnacle Grill was worthy of every single penny. The service was amazing and the food was truly on another level.

If you had a drinks package, would you recommend it?
Did not have a drinks package during this cruise.
What was the most surprising or under-the-radar activity that a first-time cruiser would miss?
The Orange Party celebrates the cruise line's Dutch heritage. Everyone across the ship wears orange while enjoying Dutch-inspired snacks and specialty orange cocktails.

What was the vibe of the pool deck onboard?
It was a relaxing retreat, perfect for unwinding as you sail between destinations.

Did you check out the kids’ facilities available onboard? What were the highlights?
The ship did have a Kids Club, but we didn't visit any of the facilities aimed at younger cruisers during our time onboard.
Which destination was the biggest surprise, and why?
In Istanbul, we had an overnight stay. I was worried we might run out of activities to do on the second day, but that certainly wasn't the case. There was so much history to discover and shopping to do, with the highlight for me being able to go inside a mosque.

For those who prefer to explore independently, what’s the best thing to do within walking distance of the dock at your favourite destination?
The best activity within walking distance of the port is visiting the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul for a unique shopping experience. It's only about a 20-minute walk from the dock.
What was disembarking like?
Very quick and easy—simply scanning in and out with our Holland America Card.
Compared to other cruise experiences, what makes this one stand out? Where could it improve?
This ship excels in its dining options. The main dining room consistently offers high-quality food and service, which is perfectly complemented by The Pinnacle Grill steakhouse. The Dive-In poolside burger bar is also brilliant.
What’s one bit of advice you would give someone booking this exact cruise that they won’t find in a brochure?
Make sure you visit all the different bars! There are plenty onboard to experience, and they all offer a completely different vibe.
What's your one-sentence summary of your experience?
High-quality all round, with plenty of food options and entertainment to keep you occupied.
