High autumnal sunshine and a wide selection of local day tours make it the world's top autumn-leaf destination. 

2. Kyoto - Japan

Kyoto holds the top spot in Asia and second position globally, combining magnificent red-and-gold maple views with plentiful autumn sunshine. Methodology

The Global Autumn Leaves Index evaluated 40 global destinations across four weighted metrics to establish an overall autumn destination score out of 100:

• Deciduous Canopy Cover (35% weight): Broadleaf forest, maple, oak, beech and vineyard terrace density within a 50 km destination radius extracted using Global Forest Watch and Copernicus Land Monitoring Service satellite data.
• Autumn Sunshine (25% weight): Sourced from Timeanddate.com and Climate-Data.org, this metric evaluates the average daily daylight hours throughout October and November, giving higher scores to locations with clearer, sunnier weather.
• Autumn Leaf Excursion Supply (20% weight): Total count of active, bookable nature tours, scenic drives, cable cars and panoramic lookouts listed on TripAdvisor and Viator within the 50 km radius.
• UK Search Demand (20% weight): Year-on-year percentage growth in UK search query volumes for autumn breaks and seasonal travel per destination sourced via Google Trends.

To calculate weighted category scores and establish an overall autumn destination score out of 100, raw metric values across the full 40-destination dataset were normalised on a 0-to-100 scale using min-max normalisation. Google Trends provided the search interest trend data, comparing the 2026 UK search volume for “autumn travel” against historical annual peaks from the previous five years.
