Demand for spooky getaways has hit a record high in 2026, with UK search interest for 'Halloween travel' up 85% on Google Trends compared to peak levels over the past five years. To help you pick your next eerie getaway, our travel experts at Iglu Cruise have ranked the top 10 cities in Europe to visit this Halloween.

Edinburgh took the overall crown as Europe’s most haunted city, closely followed by London and Rome.

Notable landmarks that contributed to this score include the Capuchin Crypt and the ancient burial complexes along the Appian Way.

4. Prague, Czechia

Prague ranks fourth overall in the index. The city demonstrated a balanced performance across all metrics, recording 145 historic sites and over 5,600 ghost tour reviews. Sunset occurs at 16:40 on Halloween evening, providing early dusk hours for guided walking tours. Primary tour routes navigate the historic Old Town, Charles Bridge and subterranean medieval vaults beneath the city centre.

5. York, England

York secured fifth place, surpassing several major European capital cities despite its smaller geographic size. The historic city received over 7,500 reviews for ghost tours, indicating a high review density relative to its population. There are 21 active guided ghost walks operating within the city's historic walls. Notable locations featured in these tours include the medieval Shambles, Clifford's Tower and the Treasurer's House.

Vienna ranks sixth in Europe, thanks to its extensive collection of imperial crypts and historic burial grounds. The Austrian capital boasts 195 catalogued historic architectural sites throughout its metropolitan area. Many visitors often combine nighttime walking tours of Brașov's Old Town with trips to the nearby Bran Castle.

The European Hauntability Index evaluated 40 major European destinations across four weighted metrics to establish an overall hauntability score out of 100:

• Historic Architecture (30% weight): Total count of catalogued historic cemeteries, catacombs, crypts, castles and ruins per city extracted using OpenStreetMap data.
• Ghost Tour Supply (20% weight): Total number of active, bookable ghost and dark history tours listed on TripAdvisor.
• Ghost Tour Demand (30% weight): Cumulative review volume for top-listed ghost tours on TripAdvisor to measure tourist engagement.
• Halloween Darkness (20% weight): Local sunset time on 31 October 2026 sourced from Timeanddate.com, awarding higher scores to cities experiencing earlier dusk.

Raw metric values were scaled from 0 to 100 using min-max normalisation across the full 40-city dataset before calculating weighted category scores. Search interest trend data was sourced via Google Trends, comparing UK search volume for 'Halloween travel' in 2026 against historical annual peaks dating back to 2004.
